The war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has claimed more than five million lives. It’s a shocking fact – but we have the power to do something about it. This devastating war is financed with profits from illegal mines. The minerals are sold onto the international market, and eventually end up in products you and I purchase. If we stopped conflict minerals from entering the products we consume, we can dry up the financial support for the war and take the first steps in peace building. That is why I’ve proposed Bill C-486, the Conflict Minerals Act. It will make sure that Canadians can choose products that don’t fund armed conflict. The Just Minerals Campaign is a national grassroots campaign in support of our bill. Together, we are building a movement that really can change the world.
Now I need your help. Join us now by doing three simple things: 1. Sign the petition now: www.ndp.ca/conflictfree 2. Join, like, and share us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/mineraljustice 3. Ask ten of your friends to join the campaign as well
2.3 million children under the age of 15 are infected with HIV. One in two children with HIV in the developing world dies before reaching his or her second birthday. Canada can play an important role in changing those statistics. In the previous parliament, the House of Commons adopted our "Medicines for All" bill to provide low-cost generic life-saving medication to developing countries with a strong vote, including 26 Conservative MPs. However, the industry minister directed Conservative senators to kill the bill in the Senate. It was a heartbreaking set-back, but our work continues. Hélène Laverdière has re-introduced the bill as C-398 and we are campaigning strongly to ensure its passage in this parliament.
What can you do to support medicines for all? Download the petition supporting C-398 here and circulate it in your community.
